“Is that what you’re wearing?” my grandmother Scarlett asked, as if there was a choice. We were standing in my living room over my shop. I liked clean lines, black, gray, white and a splash of red. Nothing fancy but still tasteful. Scarlett had helped me decorate, despite my balking at the idea. In the end, I was happy with the steel-gray wide sofa, wooden coffee table, and light fixtures with antique-style bulbs. I’d kept Christmas to a minimum in my apartment, with a simple green tree with white lights and gold ornaments. There was a wreath over the hearth, and a few other odds and ends around to make the room festive, but tasteful.

It was still early, not even nine a.m. yet, and my Christmas helpers, Heather and Ben, had already texted they were getting the shop ready to open. I wouldn’t be there all day, but I had complete confidence in their ability to run the shop without me.

At least I kept telling myself that over and over again. I hated to leave my shop in anyone else’s hands, still I knew I had to learn to let go.

“I’m Santa. I have a limited wardrobe,” I told her, adjusting the large black belt around my waist.

I wore the standard Santa fare: red velvet suit, big black belt and boots, white beard, and Santa hat. If there was anything I was missing, I wasn’t aware of it. I’d even added a little padding in my mid-section to give me some Santa bulk.

“Apparently, you haven’t seen Kurt Russell in The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix. He makes Santa look sexy, which you do not,” she said, as if that was a bad thing. “He wears a red leather, fur-trimmed overcoat. It adds the right amount of panache, which, my darling, you’re sorely lacking.”

Granted, Christmas was my thing, but the modern Christmas movies never did it for me, so I never watched them. Give me Home Alone anytime… or Scrooged with Bill Murray. Those were my classics.

“I must’ve missed that one, and even if I had seen it and admired his overcoat, where am I supposed to get anything like that?”

“From you fabulous grandmother… where else?” And she pulled a red leather, long, fur-trimmed overcoat from her extra-large bag.

Of course!

It looked amazing and expensive.

“Don’t tell me that’s the original coat?” I asked, hoping she didn’t actually buy it on some Hollywood auction site.

“It’s not. I’m fabulous, but not that fabulous, and I’m not stupid, either. That original coat probably costs a fortune, so instead, I had it copied. Remember, I used to do this kind of stuff for a living, darling. I still have connections.”

She walked over to me, holding the coat open, and helped me slip it on. As soon as I felt the soft leather on my shoulders, a weird sensation raged through me, as if the role of Santa suddenly made sense. I’d played Santa many times in my life, but I never felt like I did at that moment.
